What will I learn during the course?

The IHC is first and foremost a very practical teacher training course. The main focus on the class is on getting candidates up and in front of classes and gaining valuable experience and insight into running a class.

What is a typical day?

For the full time program, you will spend the morning (9 to 12) in seminars with your group and a teacher trainer. You will learn things such as how to introduce language and concepts and check understanding, how to teach the 4 skills, how to teach pronunciation, et cetera. After lunch, you will divide into your smaller group (maximum of 6) and one teacher trainer for teaching practice and feedback. Your day typically ends around 4:30 but many people stay behind for lesson preparation.

How does teaching practice work?
This is the integrated practicum component of the course. You will teach real ESL students real classes; all of which are observed by the teacher trainer. These students are not paying for their lessons. After class ends, you will sit down with your group and the teacher trainer for feedback on the lesson. This is when you will be able to look back on the class and discuss what happened and learn why some things work in the classroom and some things don’t.

How is the course assessed?

The simple answer is continuous assessment. You are assessed on everything you do over the course. Your final grade is determined through the four main components of the course:
1) The seminar program; 2) The observation component; 3) 3 written assignments; and 4) teaching practice.

What grades are given?

The IHC does not have letter grades. The course is pass/fail. You can achieve a distinction if all areas of your course work are exceptional. A distinction is awarded for less than 10% of all candidates. Less than 5% either do not pass or drop out of the course. Therefore, the vast majority of students receive a passing grade.

What is the 2-day post course practicum?

This is specific to IH Career College. This mini practicum allows you a chance to gain some experience in a real private language school through our sister school. IH Vancouver. In this practicum, you will work with one of the school’s experienced teachers for two days. On the first day, you will observer his/her classes and spend some time getting ready for day 2, where you will teach 4 hours of lessons. One of these lessons will be observed by the teacher.
